health and the maintenance of a healthy life style are two
of the aspects of care offered by the Maldon Hospital and an
innovative way of encouraging the community to think about
its health is through the young students in the region.
Consequently, the Hospital has introduced the Awards and
Scholarships schemes to involve and encourage our local
students, with the encouragement aimed at the two important
levels: our primary students and our tertiary students.
Maldon Hospital has been providing health care for the
Maldon region for 150 years and in 2009 it celebrated
these 150 years of continuous operation. To celebrate the
150th year, and to start a year of recognising its 150 years
of commitment to providing health care, the Hospital
presented the inaugural "Maldon Hospital Primary School
Awards" in December 2008 and awarded the inaugural
"Maldon Hospital Scholarship" in February 2009. |

| A ground
breaking initiative is the "Maldon Hospital Scholarship".
The Scholarship will be awarded each year to a student from the Maldon
region who is taking a full-time tertiary level course in a
health related area and is willing to make a commitment to
use their acquired skills in regional Victoria, but
preferably in our region. The Scholarship will provide the
student with $2,000 a year for a maximum of three years. The
Hospital anticipates that it will offer the scholarship
annually and that it will encourage students to consider
undertaking a course in a health related area. The current Scholarship holders are:
Applications for the 2010 award have now closed, a call for applications will be made in November 2010 and applications for the 2011 scholarship will close in January 2011. |

| The Maldon Hospital Awards | ||||||
| The Maldon Primary
School is working enthusiastically with the Hospital to
incorporate aspects of health into the school's curriculum
and to integrate this with activities that include the
Hospital. The students will be visiting the Hospital,
talking to its residents and staff, and participating in
some of the Hospital's activities. Towards the end of the
year the students will prepare projects based on their
experiences at the Hospital and these projects could take
any form preferred by the individual student - they could be
written, drawn, painted, sculpted, filmed, or any other
format. A panel, selected from members of the community,
will then have the difficult task of assessing the projects.
Awards will be presented for the best projects as judged by
the panel. Two awards are to be presented at the end of the year at an
appropriate school function, with a presentation to
the school to acknowledge their assistance. The projects that were submitted in 2009 were displayed at the Hospital's Open Day in August 2009. This enabled Maldon to share in the creative results of our young students. |
